The latin name for the great mullein is 'verbascum thapus'. The height of the great mullein is up to 2m its flowers are coloured yellow. The leaves are green and oval and also get bigger as they go down the plant. The great mullein is usually found on hedge banks, waysides, railway banks and sidings, waste ground and quarries. It prefers well-drained soils and dry grassy and bare places. Usually grown June-August. An interesting fact is that the plant itself is poisonous, but the dried flowers and crushed leaves are used to make cough medicines. Also a yellow dye may be extracted from the flowers.
