Trifolium pratense (Red Clover) is a species of clover native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa, but planted and naturalised in many other regions. It is widely grown as a fodder crop and is valued for its nitrogen fixation, which increases soil fertility. For these reasons it is used as a green manure crop. It was introduced into New Zealand, but failed to thrive  because it is only fertilized by bumble bees.  Bumble bees were then introduced from the UK. Now the bees are coming back because some of the species have been wiped out over here.   Wild Red Clover is a perennial of hay meadows and other semi-natural grasslands. found on well drained, damp and slightly acid soils. It does not like too much fertilizer or manure or over grazing.
