This species of poppy is native to Europe. It seeds can remain dormant for many years and is germinates when the soil is disturbed and seeds uncovered. It for this reason it appeared profusely in Flanders and now is adopted as the symbol of remembrance. For best results sow in the autumn, Seeds mainly germinate in the spring with some flowing in the autumn. The flower size is related to the soil fertility with lower fertility resulting in smaller blooms. This hardy annual like full sun and neutral to alkaline soils.
