This lovely climbing flower can often be seen in the hedgerows and verges and grows up to 2m tall. It has hairy leaves and stems, with branched clinging tendrils that allow it to climb up other shrubs and trees. The  bluish-purple flowers droop in long, one-sided clusters producing seed pods with four to eight seeds with a claw like tip.

It likes fertils soil and can grow well in damp ground. It wil not grow well in a meadow unless it is cut very late. seeds will need scarification to germinate readily.
