A Brief history

Goren Farm has been in the family since 1955 and has been farmed as extensive dairy farm up till 1990. Since then the fields have been set to hay meadows to develop a natural balance with nature. No chemicals have been used on the farm - no fields have been ploughed in living memory. Recently this balance has been complemented with a small herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle and Border Leicester sheep. We manage the hedgerows to produce wood and allow a habitat for wildlife as well as providing shelter for the farm animals. The orchards have been restored and replanted among the veteran trees and we make cider in the traditional way filtered through straw. When the new trees begin to bear fruit we will be producing apple juice as well. Our water originates from a spring line mire and is tapped with a laberynth of stone drains buried under the fields. The walled garden is being restored as a vegetable garden - vegetables for sale locally. Most of the buildings date back to 1820 and earlier and have changed little and are being carefully restored using local materials and traditional methods. We host an open weekend for the meadows in early June and a cider day in October. We are fortunate to have enthusiastic volunteers help us throughout the year through the ‘willing workers on organic farms’ scheme, (WWOOF). Our aim is to keep on farming in the traditional methods and share our experience with the community and our customers.
